Week 1 - Video Watching Blog NGUYEN KIM CHI (응웬김찌)

Summary

In the first class of this semester, the professor provided an insightful overview of Wikipedia, explaining not just its basic functions but also its broader role as a knowledge-sharing platform. While I was familiar with Wikipedia as a casual reader, I had not explored its structure or editorial processes in depth. This lecture helped me understand how Wikipedia is maintained and why it is considered a reliable yet evolving source of information.

Wikipedia includes various sections such as articles, discussion pages, and specialized resources like Wikiversity. Each of these sections serves a unique purpose, yet they all contribute to Wikipedia’s mission of providing open-access knowledge. Moving forward, I aim to enhance my ability to use Wikipedia effectively for academic research and, hopefully, contribute to it by editing and adding well-cited information.

Interesting Point

One of the most fascinating aspects of Wikipedia is its collaborative nature. The platform is powered by a global community that voluntarily contributes, edits, and maintains content. This decentralized model demonstrates the strength of collective intelligence and how large-scale knowledge production can be both efficient and democratic.

However, despite its advantages, Wikipedia also faces challenges such as misinformation, bias, and vandalism. To counteract these issues, strict editorial guidelines and citation policies are enforced, ensuring content remains as accurate and neutral as possible. The idea that anyone can edit Wikipedia is both empowering and risky—while it allows diverse perspectives to be included, it also requires constant vigilance to maintain credibility.

Discussion

Have you ever edited Wikipedia before? If so, what was your experience like? If not, would you consider contributing in the future?
