Week 1：Embarking on the Journey of Open Knowledge（WU JIACHEN)

 

Summary：

  This week marked the exciting start of our course, where I was introduced to the overall structure and expectations through Professor Piotr Konieczny's detailed introductory video. In this session, he outlined our assignments, including the blog and Wikipedia tasks, and emphasized the importance of open collaboration and knowledge sharing. The blog assignment video provided step-by-step guidance on how to register and post on the designated platform, setting a clear framework for our reflective writing. Additionally, the videos on the Wikipedia assignment and sandbox feature offered me a foundational understanding of the editing process, underscoring the need for accuracy, experimentation, and community engagement. Overall, these materials not only clarified what is expected of us but also sparked my enthusiasm for actively contributing to a global repository of knowledge, as I begin to see how digital collaboration can transform learning.

Interesting Point:

 One aspect that particularly intrigued me was the design of Wikipedia’s sandbox feature. This tool offers a risk-free environment where newcomers can experiment with editing and formatting without the pressure of affecting live content. It struck me as an ingenious solution that encourages learning through trial and error, while also maintaining the integrity of the main encyclopedia. The sandbox not only lowers the barrier for entry but also exemplifies Wikipedia’s commitment to nurturing new editors by allowing them to develop their skills in a supportive setting. This approach reflects a broader philosophy of learning by doing, where making mistakes is seen as an essential part of the creative process. It made me wonder how similar safe spaces might be implemented in other collaborative projects to foster innovation and confidence among new participants.

How can new editors easily check the reliability of their sources?

Week 1. My Recent Wikipedia Edits - Jeong seolah (정설아)

I made several edits to the Wikipedia page for 'Daegu'.  Daegu, located in the southeastern part of South Korea, is the third-largest urban area in the country, following Seoul and Busan. With a population exceeding 2.3 million, it is the fourth-largest metropolitan city in South Korea and the second-largest in the Yeongnam region after Busan. Often referred to together with the surrounding North Gyeongsang Province as Daegu-Gyeongbuk, this region is home to over 5 million residents.  1. Summarize in my own words of materials. The book is primarily about the openness of Wikipedia. Openness means that anyone can participate in the creation and editing of articles without any qualifications. Openness can be a double-edged sword. While it means that you can edit without having expert knowledge of a topic, it also means that you can participate even if you have expert knowledge. For experts, articles written by non-experts can come across as inaccurate knowledge, which can anger experts. This anger can also be a catalyst for Wikipedia to continue to improve. However, articles edited only by non-experts can cause misunderstandings and convey incorrect information, so openness can be considered a double-edged sword.
