Week 2. My Recent Wikipedia Edits - Jeong seolah (정설아)

 I made several edits to the Wikipedia page for 'Suwon'. 

Suwon, the capital city of Gyeonggi Province, is the largest city in South Korea's most populous province. Located just 30 km (19 miles) south of Seoul, Suwon is home to over 1.2 million residents, making it more populous than Ulsan. Although it is classified as a 'special case city' and has a slightly different level of autonomy compared to other cities, Suwon plays a central role in the region's economy and culture.

Below is a summary of the changes I contributed.


1) Summarize and link

Early History Section: 

- Changed the phrase "One location these materials" to "One location where these materials."

- Modified "at latest" to "at the latest."


Geography Section:

- Altered "lakes are in fact small" to "lakes are small" for clearer, more concise wording.


Education Section: Section: 

- Corrected "neighbouring" to the American English spelling "neighboring."


Hwaseong Fortress Section: 

- Changed "labour" to "labor" to reflect the American spelling.


Fashion Industry Section:

- Improved sentence structure by adding “which” to the phrase “means.”


Sport Section:

- Corrected the spelling of "remodelling" to "remodeling."


Museums Section:

- Changed "contextualising" to "contextualizing" to match American English conventions.


Transport Section: 

- Corrected "till" to "to" for proper phrasing.

- Changed "neighbouring" to "neighboring" once again to use American spelling.


Adams Memorial Hall Section:

- Adjusted "local residents" to simply "residents" for better readability.


These edits mostly focus on improving clarity, consistency in language, and standardizing spelling (mainly transitioning to American English).

2) Any new, interesting, or unusual items learned

One particularly fascinating aspect of the Suwon landmark, Hwaseong Fortress, is its historical and architectural significance, which reflects not only the vision of King Jeongjo but also the advanced construction techniques of its time. Built in 1796, the fortress was designed under the guidance of philosopher Jeong Yak-yong and was one of the first large-scale projects in Korea where workers were paid for their labor, marking a shift from the traditional corvée labor system. What makes this particularly intriguing is the detailed construction records, preserved in the Hwaseong Seongyeok Uigwe, which have been crucial for the reconstruction efforts following the Korean War. The fact that these meticulous records still guide modern restoration projects showcases the lasting influence of Hwaseong Fortress, a testament to the historical, cultural, and architectural legacy of the late Joseon period.


3) Identify at least one question, concern, or discussion angle

There is a concern about whether changing certain words to American English, such as "neighbouring" to "neighboring" or "labour" to "labor," actually enhances the clarity and readability of the text for Wikipedia readers. While these changes align with American English conventions, it's important to consider if they might affect the global accessibility and understanding of the article, especially for non-American readers. It raises the question of whether such changes are beneficial in the context of a collaborative platform like Wikipedia, where contributors and readers come from diverse linguistic backgrounds.

I made several edits to the Wikipedia page for 'Daegu'.  Daegu, located in the southeastern part of South Korea, is the third-largest urban area in the country, following Seoul and Busan. With a population exceeding 2.3 million, it is the fourth-largest metropolitan city in South Korea and the second-largest in the Yeongnam region after Busan. Often referred to together with the surrounding North Gyeongsang Province as Daegu-Gyeongbuk, this region is home to over 5 million residents.  1. Summarize in my own words of materials. The book is primarily about the openness of Wikipedia. Openness means that anyone can participate in the creation and editing of articles without any qualifications. Openness can be a double-edged sword. While it means that you can edit without having expert knowledge of a topic, it also means that you can participate even if you have expert knowledge. For experts, articles written by non-experts can come across as inaccurate knowledge, which can anger experts. This anger can also be a catalyst for Wikipedia to continue to improve. However, articles edited only by non-experts can cause misunderstandings and convey incorrect information, so openness can be considered a double-edged sword.
