Week 3 Discuss the readings - Kwon Hyunji(권현지)
1. Summary
We look back on the history of universal
encyclopedias that contain all the knowledge that people have long wanted.
Joseph Riggle argues that Wikipedia did not occur during the transition to the
digital age but rather existed as a form of knowledge sharing that has existed
since the past. Like the Encyclopédie created by French Enlightenmentists in
the 18th century and the Junto Knowledge Society founded by Benjamin Franklin
of the United States, the sharing and diffusion of knowledge through
collaboration has been something that we have wanted since the past. Also, even
before the advent of the digital age, there was a systematic organization of
information and making it possible for everyone to participate, and this
knowledge-sharing platform is accelerating with the advent of the Internet.
Wikipedia is an encyclopedia that anyone can share universal knowledge, and it
is said that human wishes that have been passed down from the past have been
realized.
2. Interesting Point
It was interesting that people have felt
the need for a universal encyclopedia since a long time ago. Wikipedia is a
relatively recent invention and has been accelerated by the development of
digital technology. It was amazing that what I thought of as such a recent
technology was what people have wanted from the past and have implemented to
some extent. Seeing how many countries shared their knowledge in their own way
and made efforts for society, I also thought about how to develop Wikipedia,
which allows us to overcome the geographic and physical limitations of the past
and create information that spreads farther and farther. Also, I felt that
Wikipedia was a good example of positively influencing people due to the
development of technology.
3. Discussion
When the definition of "universal" is unclear, could there be an encyclopedia that is "universal" as mentioned in the article? If we had to create such an encyclopedia, what rules would be needed?
