week 3 - ljhwa(이진화)

Summary

Since Wikipedia is not a newspaper, not everything should be included in Wikipedia and should not include direct news coverage. It cannot be used for advocacy, propaganda, advertising, etc., nor can it be a place for speeches to persuade someone. It is a place to organize information, but not a dictionary. Articles that begin with definition should be expanded by adding encyclopedic content.

Interesting points

Do you think Wikipedia is right to reject censorship?

- Wikipedia is not a site that is affiliated with any organization. In addition, the purpose of Wikipedia's establishment is to be neutral and for the majority. Considering that the act of "censorship" is often done by a small number of people in power, it is only natural for Wikipedia to refuse censorship. This is because it is a duty in a democratic society to have a clear understanding of the decision maker. In other cases, I believe we can reject censorship to prevent it from falling into black-and-white logic. When two opinions are written down and left to another person for evaluation, the existence of censorship will affect the evaluation. Wikipedia believes that when everything is written down as it is, it fulfills its value and achieves its goal.

Discussion

What kind of efforts has Wikipedia been making to avoid censorship?

Comments

  1. According to the article "Wikipedia: What Wikipedia is not", Wikipedia claims that they are not anarchy, democracy, bureaucracy, laboratory, battleground, or compulsory. Therefore, in this case, I am not sure whether it is a good idea to approach the topic of "censorship" in terms of "democracy" or "freedom of speech". (And I made the same mistake in my post so do not worry!) We need to make sure that we do not equate "collective intelligence" with "democracy". Wikipedia works by debate, not by vote.
