Week 4. Wikipedia contribution - Yeonseo Koo (구연서)

Summarize

Deadline 3 assignment was to add citations.
To do this, I completed the Training: For Students module "Adding citations".
I looked around the list of Korea-related topics that lacked references.
Then I decided to edit an article about South Korean singer Seo Taiji.

Here is my contribution:

The popularity of their music marked a departure from the trot style of music that previously dominated Korea's popular music scene. [citation needed]

This sentence needed citation that trot was dominant in Korean popular music before the Seo Taiji era.
I read several papers about Seo Taiji via Research Information Sharing Service (RISS) and I was able to find the paper "A Study about Sociocultural Meaning of Seo Tai ji Syndrome" by Gena Jang.

I immediately added citation to Wikipedia:

The popularity of their music marked a departure from the trot style of music that previously dominated Korea's popular music scene. [8]

The footnote is like this:

8. Jang, Gena (2014). "서태지 신드롬의 사회문화적 의미에 관한 연구" [A Study about Sociocultural Meaning of Seo Tai Ji Syndrome]. Dong-A University: 5 – via RISS.

You can check the article here.

New, interesting, or unusual items learned

Seo Taiji is his stage name.
His real name is Jeong Hyeon-cheol.
Seo Taiji was a bassist in the Korean band Sinawe.
Seo Taiji performed with BTS at his 25th anniversary concert in 2017.

Question, concern, or discussion angle

Was trot really dominant in Korean popular songs before Seo Taiji?
The 1990s was the era of trot and ballad, to be exact.
Many talented ballad singers, such as Byun Jin-sub(변진섭) and Shin Seung-hun(신승훈)
had their heyday in the 1990s.

Was Seotaiji and Boys (서태지와 아이들) the prptotype of K-pop idols?
Seotaiji and Boys was a boy band for sure.
But not an idol.
While they were popular with teenagers, t
hey were not produced by the agency.

The standard model for K-pop idols is H.O.T.
