Week1-The edits I have made to Wikipedia———LI MENGCHEN
1. Summary of My Editing Activity(linkhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Limengchen2777)
This week, I worked on editing and updating my Wikipedia user page. As a newcomer, I found this task quite challenging, especially when it came to structuring the layout, using wiki markup, and ensuring the content adhered to platform guidelines. Initially, I faced problems like formatting mistakes, non-functional links, and issues with displaying content properly. However, as I continued, I gradually gained a better understanding of Wikipedia's page design principles and editing practices. I learned how to include personal details, interests, and other relevant information effectively. Despite the difficulties, the experience was both engaging and rewarding.
2.Interesting Discoveries
Openness and Collaboration: Wikipedia allows global users to edit and maintain content together, and this collaborative model made me deeply appreciate the power of knowledge sharing and the openness of internet communities.
Edit History: Every edit has a detailed history, allowing tracking of changes made by each contributor. This not only increases transparency but also facilitates content improvement and error correction.
Strict Neutrality Principle: Wikipedia content must adhere to a neutral point of view (NPOV), which made me realize the importance of avoiding subjective bias when expressing and editing content. This has greatly helped improve my writing skills.
3.Issues to Discuss Further
Reliability of Content: Although Wikipedia requires reliable sources, the open editing environment might lead to content losing accuracy in the short term due to malicious edits or misunderstandings.
User-Friendliness for Beginners: The editing interface of Wikipedia is not very intuitive for beginners, especially when it comes to using wiki code and adjusting complex page layouts. Could this affect the participation of new users?
Understanding and Adapting to Community Guidelines: Wikipedia’s community guidelines are very detailed, but they may take time for new users to understand and adapt to. Could this unintentionally hinder the involvement of more potential contributors?
Balance on Controversial Topics: For highly controversial topics, how can Wikipedia ensure that editing is genuinely neutral and not influenced by a single standpoint?
