Week1: The Experience of Editing Wikipedia-GUO YING

 1.  Summary

In my view, Wikipedia is an open knowledge-sharing platform where users can freely edit and contribute content. The editing process typically involves creating an account, selecting an article, making modifications, and submitting them for review. Wikipedia has strict editing guidelines that emphasize neutrality, verifiability, and reliable sources. Some edits take effect immediately, while modifications to popular or controversial pages may require approval. The platform relies on experienced editors and automated bots to monitor changes, prevent disruptive edits, and ensure content accuracy. Additionally, each article has a “Discussion” page where contributors can exchange opinions, explain their edits, and resolve content disputes, making Wikipedia’s content more reliable.

2. Interesting Points

While editing a Wikipedia article, I found one of its most interesting aspects to be its collaborative nature. Contributors from around the world continuously update and refine information, making it a dynamic and evolving knowledge base rather than a static encyclopedia. Additionally, Wikipedia often experiences so-called “edit wars,” where multiple editors repeatedly modify the same article due to differing viewpoints. Another fascinating aspect is Wikipedia’s use of bots for routine maintenance, such as fixing grammar errors, restoring vandalized pages, and checking citation formats. Although Wikipedia encourages public participation, its complex editing rules can be challenging for newcomers, creating a certain barrier to entry. However, despite these challenges, Wikipedia remains a unique experiment in collective knowledge sharing.

3. Discussion

During my experience editing Wikipedia, my classmates and I engaged in an important discussion about reliability and credibility. We believe that while Wikipedia’s open editing model democratizes knowledge dissemination, it also carries the risk of spreading misinformation and biased content. Therefore, users must develop critical thinking skills and carefully evaluate information sources. Additionally, due to differences in contributors’ demographics and backgrounds, Wikipedia’s content may exhibit systemic biases that affect the way certain topics are presented.

Another key issue is the accessibility of editing. While Wikipedia’s rules are essential for maintaining content quality, they can be overly complex for newcomers, potentially discouraging public participation. Looking ahead, as AI-generated content becomes more prevalent, Wikipedia must continuously refine its strategies to uphold editorial fairness and prevent the spread of automated misinformation. Ultimately, Wikipedia’s success depends on striking a balance between openness and accuracy, ensuring that it remains a valuable and trustworthy source of information.

I made several edits to the Wikipedia page for 'Daegu'.  Daegu, located in the southeastern part of South Korea, is the third-largest urban area in the country, following Seoul and Busan.  1. Summarize in my own words of materials. The book is primarily about the openness of Wikipedia. Openness means that anyone can participate in the creation and editing of articles without any qualifications. Openness can be a double-edged sword. While it means that you can edit without having expert knowledge of a topic, it also means that you can participate even if you have expert knowledge. For experts, articles written by non-experts can come across as inaccurate knowledge, which can anger experts. This anger can also be a catalyst for Wikipedia to continue to improve. However, articles edited only by non-experts can cause misunderstandings and convey incorrect information, so openness can be considered a double-edged sword.
