Summary
In the first class of this semester, the professor provided an in-depth introduction to Wikipedia, not just focusing on its basic functions, but also exploring its various sections. While I had some exposure to Wikipedia last semester, I had only scratched the surface. This lecture gave me a deeper understanding of how Wikipedia operates, and it greatly contributed to my learning.
Wikipedia spans a wide range of topics, with various sections such as articles, Wikitravel, and more. While these sections are interconnected, they also have subtle differences. Through this semester’s study, I aim to improve my understanding and use of Wikipedia, making it a valuable tool in both my academic and personal life. My goal is to become a Wikipedia user who contributes quality content.
Interesting Point
As a global, collaborative encyclopedia, Wikipedia provides a fascinating perspective on the power of collective intelligence and group cooperation. Its user base comes from all over the world, representing diverse cultural and professional backgrounds. Together, they contribute to and review content via an open editorial system. This decentralized model demonstrates how large-scale knowledge production and management can function. Wikipedia is more than just an information repository,it is an active community where members follow strict editorial standards and citation guidelines. However, they also face the challenge of addressing bias and inaccuracies in content.
The open and collaborative culture, while beneficial, is sometimes exploited. For instance, some individuals may attempt to manipulate or alter information to serve political or business interests. To counteract this, Wikipedia has developed a complex set of rules and mechanisms to monitor and correct these issues, ensuring the accuracy and neutrality of its content.
Discussion
Have you use wiki pedia before this class? Dose it work for you?
Prior to this class, I had used Wikipedia. However, I was not sure of the confidence of the information, so I mainly used it to search for statistics related to the subject at once. The way I used Wikipedia was to check the statistics that stated the source at this time as well, and then visit the source in person to verify the confidence of the data once again.
