WEEK4: read Chapter 4 The Puzzle of Openness --LAOXINYI
1)Summary
In Chapter 4, the authors explore the concept of “openness” in Wikipedia and other open content communities. While Wikipedia proudly claims to be a “free encyclopedia that anyone can edit,” the reality is more complicated. The paper outlines how openness, inspired by the Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) movement, presents its own challenges, especially when dealing with problematic users such as trolls, vandals, and disruptive individuals. While openness is essential to the collaborative nature of Wikipedia, it often conflicts with the need for structure and quality control, sparking debate about how to balance these two values. The chapter discusses aspects such as transparency, integrity, non-discrimination, and non-interference, all of which are essential to open content communities. However, there are difficult trade-offs, especially when it comes to maintaining content quality and managing controversy or censorship.
2)Interesting Point
Tension between openness and quality: A particularly interesting point is that Wikipedia’s philosophy of openness is often tested by the need to prevent vandalism and ensure high-quality contributions. For example, when the system began to allow for more technical features, such as blocking users based on IP addresses to curb vandalism, it led to a loss of some of the ideal “open” environment that Wikipedia originally promised.
The "WikiChix" controversy: the creation of a women-only space within the wider open Wikipedia community WikiChix was a surprise. The group was created to address gender bias and provide a space for women to discuss topics in a male-dominated space. The controversy surrounding its creation and its exclusion of men revealed the conflict between openness and the desire for a safe, supportive space within a community that values inclusivity.
3)Discussion
Do you think this reduction in openness will ultimately limit the diversity of contributions, or will it preserve the integrity of the content?
