Week4:My Wikipedia Edit---CUI ZAN

1. Summary

This week, I worked on translating the Chinese Wikipedia article Big-Headed Kid and Small-Headed Father into English. While the translation itself wasn’t too hard, I ran into some issues when it came to adding references—especially for video sources. One of the original references was a video on Bilibili that seemed to be the original cartoon, but since Bilibili is a user-uploaded content platform, I wasn’t sure if it counts as a reliable source by Wikipedia standards. I also checked some official Chinese sites, but maybe because the show is pretty old, I couldn’t find any official version of the video there. That made me hesitate—should I still use the Bilibili link since the video looks legit, or should I leave it out and try to find something more “official”?

2,Interesting points

One thing I noticed during the process is how iconic this show is in China, but how little information there is about it in English. Translating it made me realize how many cultural works might just be completely missing from English Wikipedia because no one's written about them yet. It also reminded me how big the gap still is between different language Wikipedias—some topics are super detailed in one language, but totally empty in another. I feel like this kind of translation work is actually pretty meaningful.

3,Question

I’m still not totally clear on what to do when it comes to referencing things like videos from platforms like Bilibili. If the video looks authentic but isn’t from an “official” site, is it still okay to use it? And what if the official version doesn’t even exist anymore online? I wonder how other editors usually handle this kind of situation, especially when dealing with older Chinese media where the sources are hard to track down. If anyone has tips or similar experiences, I’d really like to hear them.

Comments

  1. I’ve run into this kind of situation too—it’s pretty common, especially when editing topics related to older Chinese media. In general, if the video isn’t from an official account or a clearly reliable source, Wikipedia editors tend to be cautious about using it, especially for anything potentially controversial. But if the video seems genuinely valuable and the official version is no longer available, it might still be usable as long as you clearly cite it and explain the context. Some editors also use Archive.org or leave a note on the Talk page to explain why they included the source. I think the key is to be transparent about your reasoning and make sure others can follow your thinking.
