week6: read Chapter 8 --LAOXINYI
1)Summary
Chapter 8 concludes the book by reflecting on the broader implications of Wikipedia’s success and the challenges it faces as it continues to grow. The author uses the metaphor of a jigsaw puzzle to explain how Wikipedia’s collaborative culture—underpinned by neutrality and integrity—helps build the encyclopedia’s collective knowledge. The metaphor emphasizes that while the individual pieces (contributions) may not always fit perfectly or harmoniously, the effort to piece them together creates something valuable.
The chapter discusses how Wikipedia’s success is not simply due to technology (the “wiki” format) but to the collaborative culture that drives it. The author agrees with Larry Sanger, one of the co-founders of Wikipedia, who acknowledges that successful collaborative systems require a strong culture of shared values, such as integrity, not just the software itself. This culture of “integrity” fosters collaboration and patience, which is essential for resolving conflicts within the community.
However, the chapter also recognizes the tensions inherent in open content communities. Despite its collaborative and open nature, Wikipedia is not immune to human imperfections, such as pettiness, conflict, and name-calling. The author invokes Godwin’s Law to emphasize the “us versus them” mentality that can emerge in online communities and how this mentality can sometimes undermine the collaborative process. Despite these problems, an emphasis on goodwill and fostering collaboration can help mitigate these challenges.
A key takeaway from this chapter is that Wikipedia, while committed to creating a universal encyclopedia, is far from perfect. The community faces growing pains, and there are concerns about its future, particularly its growing bureaucracy and the possibility of decline. Despite this, the authors express optimism, noting that even if Wikipedia “forks” (splits into multiple versions) or ceases to exist, the ideas and community behind it may live on in other projects.
Finally, the authors view Wikipedia’s achievements as a “happy accident,” and express the belief that Wikipedia has come closest to achieving the vision of a universal encyclopedia, even if its path has been imperfect and full of surprises.
2)Interesting Point
In this chapter, I learned new and interesting things:
- Collaboration and integrity: Collaboration driven by shared norms is important even in the face of conflict.
- Technology and culture: Wikipedia’s success is not due to technology alone (such as the wiki format)—it’s culture that fosters collaboration.
- Human nature and utopian ideals: Acknowledging that while Wikipedia aims to be a utopian resource, it is still shaped by human nature, including the potential for conflict, disagreement, and abuse.
- Leadership and governance: Balancing the need for open content with the need for leadership or authority to deal with conflict and malicious actors.
- The future of Wikipedia: Speculations about how Wikipedia will continue to evolve, challenges it faces, and possible “forks” or splits into new projects.
3)Discussion
As Wikipedia gets bigger, is there likely to be some degree of concentration of power, such as "authority" issues with administrators and other leadership roles? Would this concentration affect the openness and inclusiveness of Wikipedia?
