Week 5. My Recent Wikipedia Edits - Jeong seolah (정설아)

I made several edits to the Wikipedia page for 'Hanbok'.

Hanbok is a traditional Korean attire characterized by its vibrant colors, simple lines, and elegant silhouette. It consists of a jeogori (a short jacket with long sleeves) and chima (a wrap-around skirt) for women, while men wear jeogori with baji (loose-fitting trousers). Historically worn as daily clothing, hanbok is now mainly reserved for special occasions such as weddings, holidays, and cultural ceremonies.

With deep cultural significance, hanbok reflects Korea's heritage and aesthetic values. The garments are often adorned with intricate embroidery and symbolic patterns. Although modernized versions of hanbok have gained popularity in recent years, the traditional hanbok remains a cherished symbol of Korean identity.

One interesting aspect I learned is that cultural exchange in fashion was not one-sided; while Korean rulers and aristocrats adopted clothing styles from various Chinese dynasties, Korea also influenced the clothing of the Yuan dynasty’s upper class. The fact that Mongol royal women’s clothing and attire in the Yuan imperial court were impacted by Goryeo hanbok shows that Korea was not merely a passive recipient of foreign trends but also an active contributor to the broader fashion landscape of East Asia. Additionally, it was intriguing to learn that commoners in Korea largely maintained their indigenous clothing style despite the foreign influences shaping the attire of the elite.

The direction of cultural exchange: Given that Goryeo hanbok influenced the royal attire of the Yuan dynasty, it seems that cultural exchange between Korea and China was not merely one-sided but rather interactive. In that case, were there instances where hanbok influenced foreign clothing during the Joseon dynasty as well?
