Week 9 Wikipedia Editing Report—BAI SHIQI

During Week 9, I focused on editing and improving three Wikipedia articles: Civil Society, Cognitive Warfare, and Xi Jinping’s Anti-Corruption Campaign. This week’s work helped me better understand how to present complex and sometimes sensitive topics in a clear, neutral, and informative way.

1. Civil Society

I added content related to the current state of civil society in China, especially how it functions under institutional constraints. I also included discussion on the role of digital platforms in promoting civic engagement. To ensure the article was well-rounded, I drew on recent academic studies and made sure to standardize key terms for consistency and clarity. The goal was to reflect the nuances of civil society in non-Western contexts without introducing bias.

2. Cognitive Warfare

This is a relatively new and evolving concept in military and media studies. I expanded the article by explaining how cognitive warfare differs from information warfare and psychological operations. I also incorporated references to how organizations like NATO and the U.S. military define and apply this strategy. What stood out to me was how social media has become a major battlefield for shaping public perception—something that raises serious questions about truth, trust, and control in the digital age.

3. Xi Jinping’s Anti-Corruption Campaign

In this entry, I updated information on recent developments, including notable cases involving local officials and state-owned enterprise executives. I also added academic perspectives on the political impact of the campaign, such as power centralization and institutional reform. I tried to strike a balance between documenting key facts and acknowledging different interpretations of the campaign’s motives and outcomes.

Reflections and Takeaways:

This week’s editing experience taught me the importance of neutral tone and verifiable sources—especially when working on politically sensitive topics. For example, writing about the anti-corruption campaign required careful wording to avoid making assumptions or sounding one-sided. At the same time, editing the article on cognitive warfare made me realize how fast new ideas can emerge and gain relevance in today’s information landscape. Overall, contributing to Wikipedia this week felt like a way of engaging with public knowledge, not just consuming it.
