Week4(extra credit)-Goffman’s book The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life.(Everyday Life and Social Structure)- YU JIE 여결
Summary
Goffman compares social interaction to stage performances, with each person adjusting their "front-stage" and "back-stage" images according to different contexts. After reading Chapters 5, 6, and the conclusion sections, I have deeply felt the practical significance of this theory in contemporary society, particularly in the digital age. With the widespread use of social media, people have become increasingly meticulous in shaping their images, making this "performance" more complex and potentially leaving long-term impacts. Although some parts of the book are more academic, I have found that Goffman's theory remains highly valuable for understanding and analyzing modern interpersonal relationships through my own daily experiences.
Interesting points
In daily life, people often unconsciously adjust their words and actions to fit their environment. This adjustment is typically an unconscious reaction aimed at ensuring that one meets others' expectations and social norms in different social contexts. Through subtle changes in language, behavior, or posture, people can maintain harmony in various interactions and avoid conflicts or discomfort. Such adjustments not only help establish and maintain interpersonal relationships but also facilitate smooth transitions for individuals in complex social environments and demonstrate appropriate social identities.
Discussion
In today's era dominated by social media, are we actively shaping our image, or are we guided or even constrained by the rules of social platforms?
