Week5-(extra credit) Casablanca Movie- YU JIE 여결

 Summary

Casablanca is a classic film about war, love, and choice. In a remote Moroccan city, Rick owns a café where fugitives, spies, and fugitives converge. He seemed detached from politics and emotion, yet was forced by fate to make crucial choices. Ilsa's arrival shattered his meticulously maintained cold life, and Lazlo's just mission added to the complexity of this triangular relationship. The core of this movie is not just about choosing love, but also about the characters' struggle between identity and moral responsibility.

Goffman offers a fantastic perspective to reassess these characters. In his theory, life is like a play, with everyone performing on the social stage.

Interesting points

Ilsa exuded firmness and calmness in front of Lazlo, like an ideal partner living for her beliefs; but when she turned to face Rick, her emotions became delicate and soft, filled with unspeakable emotional entanglements. This isn't to say that she is hypocritical, but rather that she is caught between responsibility and love, pulled by two values. In front of different people, she tried to respond to different expectations. The part she didn't say out loud instead revealed the most emotion.

Discussion

In reality, when personal emotions conflict with moral responsibility, what choices do we make?

Comments

  1. I really enjoyed your take on Casablanca and how you applied Goffman’s theory. The way you described Ilsa’s change in behavior depending on who she’s with really stood out to me. It shows how people perform different “roles” in different situations, not to be dishonest, but to meet emotional and social expectations. Your point about her unspoken feelings revealing the most was especially powerful. It made me think about how we often hide our true emotions in real life too. Your blog helped me see the film in a deeper way—thank you for sharing!
