Week5-(extra credit2) Casablanca Movie-진사우 CHEN SIYU

 Summary:

I believe Casablanca is a classic black-and-white film that blends romance, war, and politics, directed by Michael Curtis and starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman. The story takes place in Casablanca, a Moroccan city that served as a transit point for war fugitives during World War II. The protagonist Rick is the owner of a bar, cold on the outside but complex on the inside.


One day, his ex-lover Ilsa and her husband Lazlo, a underground leader who resisted the Nazis, suddenly appeared at his bar. As the story unfolds, Rick struggles between love and justice, ultimately choosing to let go of love and help Lazlo escape Nazi pursuit, returning to the front lines of resistance.

Interesting points:

I think Casablanca is known as a "textbook of lines," where "Here's looking at you, kid." ”、“We'll always have Paris. ”、“This is the beginning of a beautiful friendship. All became golden sayings in film history. These words not only carry emotional tension but also possess a distinctive characteristic of their times.And while the core of the movie is a love story, the backdrop is a serious war and political situation. This approach of placing personal emotions within a grand historical context makes the plot thicker and more impactful.


Discussion:

I believe Casablanca is hailed as an eternal classic not just because of its touching love story, but because it tells the story of how individuals choose between private and public interests during turbulent times. Rick ultimately abandoned Elsa to achieve greater justice, and this "sacrifice of the ego" narrative still resonates with people today.


The film also explores themes of fate and choice. In this seemingly powerless chaos, every decision has the potential to alter someone else's fate. Rick could have chosen to escape, but he ultimately joined the resistance in his own way, a transformation that reflects individual growth and awakening.

    I agree. Casablanca transcends a simple love story because it taps into a deeply human conflict: the choice between personal happiness and the greater good. Rick’s decision shows how true heroism sometimes lies in letting go of what we most want for something bigger than ourselves. In today’s world, where individualism often dominates, stories like this remind us of the enduring value of selflessness and moral courage.

 1. Summarize in my own words of materials. The book is primarily about the openness of Wikipedia. Openness means that anyone can participate in the creation and editing of articles without any qualifications. Openness can be a double-edged sword. While it means that you can edit without having expert knowledge of a topic, it also means that you can participate even if you have expert knowledge. For experts, articles written by non-experts can come across as inaccurate knowledge, which can anger experts. This anger can also be a catalyst for Wikipedia to continue to improve.
