Week5 - Kim jong min (hanyang) What I learned about notable and deletion on Wikipedia
Summary and my thoughts
Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, but not all information can be listed and articles can be deleted. Wikipedia is not a personal blog or social network, so it is not a repository of personal experiences or feelings, nor is it simply a repository of information. It is also not an advertising or promotional space, so articles promoting specific brands, companies, products, people, or organizations are not allowed. Wikipedia is also not a real-time news site, and only covers historically significant events, not simply updates on recent events. Not every topic is eligible for inclusion, and articles may be removed if they lack credible sources.
There are many reasons why articles are removed from Wikipedia. The most common reason is a lack of independent and reliable sources. Sources such as personal blogs, social media posts, company websites, and promotional materials are likely to be removed because they are difficult to verify. Articles that contain advertising or promotional content will also be removed because they are not in line with Wikipedia's purpose. Articles that glorify or negatively portray a particular company or person may also be considered a violation of neutrality and removed. Articles that do not meet the criteria for eminence are also subject to removal. Creating an article on Wikipedia does not mean that the subject is famous; it must have a well-documented history of coverage in independent, reliable sources in order to be included.
On Wikipedia, prominence is an important criterion for determining whether an article is eligible for inclusion. To demonstrate eminence, an article needs independent, reliable sources that have reported extensively on the topic. Examples include newspaper articles, academic papers, and authoritative publications. On the other hand, personal blogs, social media posts, corporate websites, and press releases are not appropriate sources for demonstrating eminence. Articles that don't meet Wikipedia's eminence criteria are likely to be removed, so it's important to maintain a neutral point of view when writing an article and to make sure you have enough credible sources.
Discussions
I use Wikipedia when I want to get additional information about a person or event that interests me. I use Wikipedia and NamuWiki as if they were Internet encyclopedias. I believe that Wikipedia's popularity as an Internet encyclopedia is due to its strict deletion policy, which is based on these criteria of eminence and reliability. Do you use Wikipedia to learn about events and people? Share with us why you use Wikipedia and how you get your information from other sources on the internet other than wikis!
I use also wiki or namu wiki for searching some people. However, when I get information about something like an event or an object, I tend to refer to articles or YouTube videos featuring experts rather than Wikipedia or Namuwiki.
