Week5 -- My Wikipedia Edits -- GUAN YUE
Summary
This week, I worked on the English Wikipedia article for I Love Anisong. Instead of editing the main content, I added a comment on the article’s talk page about its notability. To support my comment, I did a detailed WP:BEFORE search. At first, I thought just having an official website would be enough, but after listening to the professor’s explanation, I realized that Wikipedia requires independent third-party sources to establish notability — official sources alone don’t count. After some searching, I found two independent news articles from Anime News Network. One of them reports on the Hong Kong concert and its worldwide live stream, and the other covers the Malaysia concert and its artist lineup. These articles give independent coverage of the event and help support the article’s notability under Wikipedia’s guidelines. Through this edit, I hope to help the Wikipedia community better evaluate whether the article deserves to stay.
New Things I Learned
While looking for sources, I realized that even for an event like I Love Anisong, which has been around for years, it’s not that easy to find truly independent and reliable coverage. There are official websites and ticketing pages, but these are primary sources and don’t count toward notability. At first, I mainly focused on these official materials, but after hearing the professor’s explanation, I understood that I needed to look for third-party articles. However, finding them turned out to be harder than I expected. Even though I tried different search terms, many results were still from the event organizers or ticketing platforms. It made me realize that for topics like this, reliable third-party coverage can be pretty limited, and you really have to dig to find something useful. Luckily, Anime News Network had some helpful reports about the concerts and their international reach.
Question for Discussion
While working on this edit, I started to wonder about something: how much weight do industry media like Anime News Network carry when it comes to Wikipedia’s notability standards? Even though ANN is an independent source and offers useful information, a lot of its content still comes from event organizers. So, it feels like it’s independent but also partly dependent at the same time. In cases like this, how should we decide if the source is strong enough to support notability? I think this is an interesting question worth discussing, especially for topics related to pop culture, since they often rely on industry media for coverage.
