Week6-Can Wikipedia integrate into today's fast-developing society?--진사우 (CHEN SIYU)

 Summary:

I believe that Wikipedia's "social integration" refers to the process by which individuals or groups gradually adapt to mainstream social norms, values, and behaviors. It is commonly used to describe how immigrants, marginalized groups, cultural minorities, or new individuals entering a particular social environment gain acceptance and a sense of belonging. This issue is particularly important in today's rapidly changing and increasingly diverse society.

Interesting points:

Many people mistakenly believe that social integration is a one-sided adaptation—"you must become like us"—but Wikipedia notes that social integration is often a "two-way interactive" process. While individuals strive to learn languages, understand cultures, and adapt to institutions, society is also adjusting its structure and culture to accommodate a wider range of members.

Discussion:

First, I believe that language is an important component of cultural identity and a bridge connecting people. Lack of language makes it difficult to communicate with society, find a job, and build social relationships. This not only leads to information gaps but also creates a sense of isolation. Many immigrants start by learning language when they first enter a country, as it is the first key to unlocking societal doors.

And, Even if society is willing to accept it, individuals find it difficult to truly integrate without active learning and adaptation. Social integration requires time, but it also demands continuous experimentation from individuals. Many successful integrators share common traits: a willingness to step out of their comfort zones, participate in community activities, understand different cultures, and find common ground. So I believe that proactively establishing connections is a necessary step toward integration.
