Week6 discuss the readings-Kwon Hyunji(권현지)

 1. Summary

With the advent of AI, the problem of a rapid increase in Wikipedia traffic is present. Since 2024, the demand for the basic bandwidth of content has been steadily increasing, and this increase in basic usage means that they cannot handlespecial events that can lead to a surge in traffic. As such, the emergence of AI in Wikipedia puts a significant burden on the infrastructure that allows everyone to access the site. At Wikipedia, considerable time and resources are being invested in responding to excessive traffic. To providereliable content, it must be done in a sustainable way when responding to massive traffic.

2. Interesting point

The decline in content quality and licensing problems that occur due to the rapid increase in Wikipedia traffic due to the advent of AI were interesting. Many people are concerned about AI because it puts excessive load on infrastructure and can lead to accidents. If the quality of content starts to decline, the number of people using it may decrease because they cannot find good content. An environment can be created where it is difficult to obtain the desired information. In addition, the licensing problem is also an essential part to be solved. As AI is increasing, efforts to solve various problems that arise with interest are needed.

3. Discussion

How can we respond to the emergence of AI?

How should I address the content quality issue?

How should I set the criteria for copyright issues caused by AI?

What other issues are at risk of developing other than the ones mentioned so far?

Comments

  1. The connection between Al and Wikipedia's infrastructure issues-it's something I hadn't thought much about before. The point about how declining content quality could affect user trust is also very true, especially since many people rely on Wikipedia daily. I agree that we need clear standards for copyright and licensing issues as Al grows more involved. Your questions at the end are very thoughtful and show that you're thinking deeply about the long-term impact. I'm also curious about what new problems might appear as Al becomes more advanced.

  2. Hi Hyunji, I think your summary clearly captures the main issue raised in the reading—how AI-driven traffic is impacting Wikipedia's sustainability. I especially liked how you connected the infrastructure overload with the potential decline in content quality. That was a strong point!

One thing you might consider is going a bit deeper into specific examples. For instance, when you mentioned licensing problems, it would be helpful to give a real or hypothetical case—like AI scraping images from Wikimedia Commons without proper credit. This would make your point even more concrete.

Also, your discussion questions are thoughtful! I wonder if you could combine the first two questions into one broader question about how Wikipedia can maintain both technical stability and content integrity in the age of AI.

Overall, great job raising key issues—I enjoyed reading your thoughts!
