Week6---Edits to Wikipedia in the past week---ZHANG XIAOTONG(장효동)

 Summary

In the past week, I started translating articles in the Wikipedia sandbox. The selected article topic is the Welcome to Video case, which involves a global child pornography website "Welcome to Video" created by Korean Son Jung-woo. The translation process not only needs to faithfully convey the original information, but also needs to consider the sensitive expressions in the Chinese context, term conversion, and the accuracy of the Wikipedia format. Through this practice, I deepened my understanding of the case and also realized the delicate balance between language and morality when dealing with sensitive topics.


Interesting Points

1. Be careful when translating names of people and organizations

Some relevant terms and expressions, characters and law enforcement agencies of many countries (such as the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the Korean National Police Agency, the UK National Crime Agency, etc.) used repeatedly in the original English text must be accurately found in the Chinese official name, or the translation should try to avoid ambiguous expressions, otherwise it may cause misunderstanding.

2. Wikipedia editing format learning

While translating this article, I not only understood the content of the article, but also experienced the fun and challenge of the editing process. When operating in the sandbox, I learned how to add a catalog of entries, reference citation format, internal link settings, and add categories. Although these Wiki syntaxes are a bit cumbersome, they have improved my structured writing skills.


Areas for discussion:


Wikipedia requires a "neutral point of view", but when faced with extreme events involving this article and other transnational crimes, it is difficult to be completely emotionless, so how to express a moral attitude towards vicious events while maintaining neutrality becomes a problem.

Week 1. My Recent Wikipedia Edits - Jeong seolah (정설아)

I made several edits to the Wikipedia page for 'Daegu'.  Daegu, located in the southeastern part of South Korea, is the third-largest urban area in the country, following Seoul and Busan. Week4 - Review about the readings for the next week. - Jo HyeonSeong (조현성)

 1. Summarize in my own words of materials. The book is primarily about the openness of Wikipedia. Openness means that anyone can participate in the creation and editing of articles without any qualifications. Openness can be a double-edged sword. While it means that you can edit without having expert knowledge of a topic, it also means that you can participate even if you have expert knowledge. For experts, articles written by non-experts can come across as inaccurate knowledge, which can anger experts. This anger can also be a catalyst for Wikipedia to continue to improve. However, articles edited only by non-experts can cause misunderstandings and convey incorrect information, so openness can be considered a double-edged sword.
