Week6---Wikipedia and artificial intelligence: new challenges in knowledge creation and consumption YANJINJIN(염금금)
Summary
Since the beginning of 2024, the impact of AI on Wikipedia has gradually become apparent. More and more automated crawlers have caused a sharp increase in Wikipedia's bandwidth demand by downloading images, videos, and other files. In particular, when some events occurred, such as the death of Jimmy Carter, Wikipedia's traffic surged, partly caused by AI crawlers. This phenomenon shows that AI not only plays an important role in content creation, but also plays an increasingly important role in the consumption and dissemination of knowledge.
Interesting point
Most automated programs access content in a "batch read" mode, even accessing less popular pages, which is different from the browsing habits of ordinary users. This has led to greater pressure on Wikipedia's core data centers and a significant increase in resource consumption. Although Wikipedia provides free content, its infrastructure support requires a lot of money and technology investment.
Discussion
On the basis of knowledge sharing and openness, how can we balance automated content consumption with sustainable infrastructure use? In particular, will AI's high demand for resources affect the long-term development of Wikipedia and other open platforms? Will the use of artificial intelligence affect the accuracy and quality control of knowledge? In the future, how should we ensure the reliability and fairness of knowledge while promoting technological development?
The issues raised in the article are very interesting, and the access pressure brought by AI is indeed worthy of attention. It is suggested that we can further discuss how to control the resource consumption of automatic programs while maintaining open sharing? For example, can we set access restrictions or guide AI developers to use these resources more reasonably?
ReplyDeleteIn the broader context, it is an inevitable fact that data is captured by AI. How can we reduce the traffic to AI? Or do you think AI can read website data at will?
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting how you mentioned Al reading even the less popular pages-that's something I hadn't thought about. It makes sense that it would put a lot of pressure on Wikipedia's system. Your questions also got me thinking, especially about how we can keep content reliable while tech keeps growing. It's kinda crazy how fast things are changing. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
