Week7 -- Class Discussion -- GUAN YUE

Assignment 1: When you search for information, do you prefer to use AI or Wikipedia? Why?

1. Summary
Before I took a Wikipedia-related course last semester, I had barely used Wikipedia at all. Even if I saw it pop up in search results, I rarely clicked on it. I definitely didn’t use it to find information or edit articles. I used to rely more on Baidu Search—just type in a few keywords, scan the first few links, and pick whatever answer looked good enough.
But after learning how Wikipedia works—how articles are written, edited, and sourced—I began to understand its value, and I now occasionally use it when I need more in-depth or academic content. Still, I’ve always found AI tools, especially ChatGPT, more helpful overall. They’re faster, more flexible, and fit better with how I like to learn.

2. Interesting Items
What I like most about AI is how “conversational” it feels. Unlike search engines that just throw links at me, AI gives direct answers. It organizes the information, explains the background, defines terms, and sometimes even gives examples all in one response.
This really helps when I don’t know the exact keyword for what I’m looking for. AI can figure out what I mean and guide me in the right direction. It also suggests related ideas I didn’t even think to ask. Wikipedia, while full of useful content, can be harder to use if you’re not already familiar with the topic or the right search terms.

3. Question or Critique
Of course, AI has its downsides too. One big issue is that it doesn’t always show clear sources. Sometimes it even makes up references that sound real but aren’t. That’s why, when I need reliable facts—like for school papers or Wikipedia editing—I’ll still double-check using Wikipedia or other sources.
This made me thinking: What if we could combine the strengths of both tools? Use AI to quickly understand the big picture, and then turn to Wikipedia for detailed info and trustworthy sources. That kind of mixed approach seems much more practical for how we actually look up information today.
