 Summary  

《Good Faith Collaboration》 is a book by Joseph Reagle, published in 2010, which explores how Wikipedia achieves collaboration through its community culture. The book emphasizes that Wikipedia is not just a technical project, but a cultural practice built on principles like good faith, consensus, and openness. Through historical review and ethnographic methods, the author analyzes Wikipedia’s ideals, policies, and governance.

Interesting Points  

Assume Good Faith (AGF): In the Wikipedia community, editors are expected to assume others are acting with good intentions, helping to build a foundation of trust.  

Open but rule-based: While anyone can edit Wikipedia, it is governed by clear policies like neutrality and verifiability.  

“Benevolent Dictator”: Founder Jimmy Wales still plays a guiding role in the decentralized system, demonstrating a balance between leadership and autonomy.

 Discussion  

This book helped me realize that collaboration depends not only on tools, but also on culture. Wikipedia’s success shows that an open platform can still produce high-quality results—if supported by strong values and clear norms. So, in our own studies, work, or group projects, could we also build a similar culture of good faith collaboration?

    We can establish a solid foundation for cooperation by fostering mutual respect, clear communication, and shared goals. Just like Wikipedia, success comes not only from open platforms but also from a culture of trust and responsibility.

I made several edits to the Wikipedia page for 'Daegu'.  Daegu, located in the southeastern part of South Korea, is the third-largest urban area in the country, following Seoul and Busan.  1. Summarize in my own words of materials. The book is primarily about the openness of Wikipedia. Openness means that anyone can participate in the creation and editing of articles without any qualifications. Openness can be a double-edged sword. While it means that you can edit without having expert knowledge of a topic, it also means that you can participate even if you have expert knowledge. For experts, articles written by non-experts can come across as inaccurate knowledge, which can anger experts. This anger can also be a catalyst for Wikipedia to continue to improve. However, articles edited only by non-experts can cause misunderstandings and convey incorrect information, so openness can be considered a double-edged sword.
