The content on Wikipedia is contributed by global users, and anyone can edit and revise articles, which means it possesses a unique "collective wisdom," but it also raises potential issues, particularly those related to the accuracy and bias of the information.


Wikipedia aims to address these issues through its content review and editing processes. Despite this, maintaining Wikipedia's neutrality and accuracy remains a challenge, especially when it comes to sensitive topics.

1. Wikipedia's self-verification mechanism

One of Wikipedia's key features is its "open editing" system, which means that any user can edit existing articles. Although this may sound like it could lead to confusion or errors, in reality, Wikipedia can effectively correct them through community involvement. Especially for popular or sensitive topics, articles undergo frequent revisions and discussions, significantly enhancing the accuracy of the content.


2. Challenges of various biases

Despite Wikipedia's clear "neutrality" requirements, biases still frequently arise in practice. Editors' backgrounds, cultural beliefs, and political stances often influence how they interpret and present information. For example, entries on certain historical events or political issues may differ due to editors' differing stances, posing a significant challenge for Wikipedia.


3. Transparent citation and source requirements

Compared to other information platforms, one of Wikipedia's major advantages is its strict requirement that all facts and data must have reliable sources. This approach helps Wikipedia maintain the high reliability of its information and makes it an important tool for academic research and information verification. Wikipedia articles typically list detailed references that users can check at any time to ensure the authenticity of the information.

I made several edits to the Wikipedia page for 'Daegu'.  Daegu, located in the southeastern part of South Korea, is the third-largest urban area in the country, following Seoul and Busan.  1. Summarize in my own words of materials. The book is primarily about the openness of Wikipedia. Openness means that anyone can participate in the creation and editing of articles without any qualifications. Openness can be a double-edged sword. While it means that you can edit without having expert knowledge of a topic, it also means that you can participate even if you have expert knowledge. For experts, articles written by non-experts can come across as inaccurate knowledge, which can anger experts. This anger can also be a catalyst for Wikipedia to continue to improve. However, articles edited only by non-experts can cause misunderstandings and convey incorrect information, so openness can be considered a double-edged sword.
