Week 11 - Blog of Commons: FAQ

Summary :

Wikimedia Commons is a repository of media that is autonomously created and maintained by users. Wikimedia can contain many forms and types of media, including photos, diagrams, animations, music, spoken text, video clips, and more. We believe that the Wikimedia projects can serve as an online site (like a cloud service and storage disk) for storing materials, information, and media from many different countries, so that future generations can pass on the information, technology, and history of our generation. As with other Wikis, all multimedia content uploaded to Wikicommons must be licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution CC BY or CC BY-SA license, and must be free from copyright issues or be licensed media. Files should always be added to a descriptive category so that they are not easily deleted and lost.

Opinion :

I usually visit Wikimedia Commons to get photos that are free from copyright issues or to upload to a wikidocument for a Wikipedia article writing assignment at my university. I'm Korean, and it seems that English-speaking people use Wikis more than Koreans and Asians. There are a lot of photos and other media uploaded to Wikimedia with English titles and English categories, and they are easily searchable. However, there is a lack of media resources with Korean titles and categories. I think Koreans and Asians would be more willing to use wikis if Wikimedia made efforts to make them more accessible to more languages. I think Koreans want a more intuitive interface. Wikia has a lot of resources, as its nickname is an online encyclopedia, but I think it has a slightly complicated and unintuitive site structure like a real encyclopedia.
