Their funding structures are also different. MBC is funded primarily through advertising revenue rather than subscription fees. In contrast, KBS relies on subscription fees for more than 50 percent of its finance. These fees are collected through electricity bills and are mandatory for citizens.
In terms of content, MBC primarily produces dramas and comedy shows, while KBS focuses on news and documentaries. However, MBC news and investigative journalism programs also have maintained steady public interest.
The CEO of MBC is elected by the board of the Foundation for Broadcast Culture. However, the members of this board are appointed by the Korea Communications Commission, an agency directly under the President. Therefore, MBC is not entirely free from political influence.
Whenever the CEO of MBC is replaced, reporters and producers have protested by going on strike. In 2017, hundreds of employees participated in a strike opposing the appointment of CEO Kim Jang-gyeom. This resulted in a loss of about 70 million dollars and led to the cancellation of most programs.
Will the government continue to try to control MBC in the future? Will viewers support the strikes despite the inconvenience caused?
Since the government indirectly controls the appointment of MBC’s CEO through the Korea Communications Commission, it is likely to continue influencing the broadcaster. While strikes cause inconvenience, many viewers understand they are in defense of press freedom and tend to support them. However, prolonged strikes may reduce public support over time.
