Week 11 – Wikipedia Edits (Chaebin Park 박채빈)
1. Summary
This week, I edited the Wikipedia page for the "National Science Museum, South Korea".
I visited the museum during a recent trip to Daejeon, and I chose it as my editorial topic because I thought making relevant information more accessible on Wikipedia could help foreign tourists enhance their experience. I added sections about visitor information and exhibitions, including key details such as opening hours, admission fees, and various programs offered at the museum.
2. Interesting Points
I was surprised to find that, despite the National Science Museum’s large scale and its status as a major tourist attraction and hands-on learning center in Daejeon, the Wikipedia page contained only minimal information. Considering the increasing number of international visitors to Korea, it was both interesting and concerning that such an important public institution lacked a proper online presence. This experience made me reflect on the importance of digital visibility and how platforms like Wikipedia can significantly influence how places are perceived and accessed by global audiences.
3. Discussion
Through this editing experience, I realized that many major locations in South Korea are still underrepresented on Wikipedia. Unfortunately, even basic information such as operating hours, ticket prices, and exhibition details was missing, especially given Wikipedia’s widespread use by international travelers. I hope to continue contributing by filling in these kinds of informational gaps. This process also reminded me of the importance of using reliable sources to ensure the accuracy, objectivity, and trustworthiness of the content provided on collaborative platforms like Wikipedia.
1) How well do you think everyday cultural sites and public spaces are represented on Wikipedia in your own country?
2) If you had the chance to edit Wikipedia, what topic or place would you want to improve or update?
Chaebin Park's reflection this week combines her personal travel experience with her Wikipedia editing practice. The topic she chose is close to reality and has practical significance. By adding visitor information to the Daejeon National Museum of Science, she showed her concern for information accessibility and cultural communication, especially how to improve the online acquisition experience of foreign tourists through Wikipedia, which hits the social value of Wikipedia as a "global public knowledge platform." The second part mentioned that the lack of information on the museum page was surprising, which shows the disconnect between digital visibility and institutional cognition. This observation is inspiring. However, it is recommended to further deepen it in the third part "Discussion", such as exploring: Why are public institutions often neglected in the construction of digital content? Or how to encourage more people to participate in the construction of local entries? Overall, this is a warm and problem-conscious field editing reflection. If it can be expanded in depth, it will be more critical and educational.
