New, interesting, or unusual items learned

EBS used to be a part of KBS and became independent in 1990. However, they still rely financially on KBS. 3 percent of KBS subscription fees are allocated to EBS. KBS subscription fee is 2,500 won, which is about 2 dollars. Therefore, EBS share of the subscription fee is only 70 won, roughly 5 cents. 

Despite chronic budget shortages, EBS have produced high-quality documentaries. Most of their revenue comes from publishing. They sell textbooks and lectures to prepare for the College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT), civil service recruitment exams, and English tests like TOEIC and TOEFL. 

In particular, the preparation book series “Suneung Teukgang (수능특강)” and “Suneung Wanseong (수능완성)” for the CSAT are especially popular among Korean high school students, selling hundreds of thousands of copies every year. 

Question, concern, or discussion angle

Due to the exceptionally low subscription fee of 70 Korean won (approximately 5 cents), EBS has been facing ongoing financial challenges. While they generate revenue by selling exam preparation books and lectures, some criticize EBS for being excessively commercial despite its role as a public broadcaster. What do you think? Should public broadcasters refrain from pursuing profit? Should EBS increase their subscription fee or should they continue focusing on publishing, as they always have?

    I think the subscription fee for public broadcasting, including EBS, is very low compared to other countries. This is because sufficient funds are necessary to fulfill the duty of neutrality and public broadcasting in a capitalist society. Taking EBS as an example, most of the instructors who try to make the course work out of a sense of duty or service. However, a lot of the funds will also attract good instructors with rather strategic ideas to improve the overall quality.

 1. Summarize in my own words of materials. The book is primarily about the openness of Wikipedia. Openness means that anyone can participate in the creation and editing of articles without any qualifications. Openness can be a double-edged sword. While it means that you can edit without having expert knowledge of a topic, it also means that you can participate even if you have expert knowledge. For experts, articles written by non-experts can come across as inaccurate knowledge, which can anger experts. This anger can also be a catalyst for Wikipedia to continue to improve. However, articles edited only by non-experts can cause misunderstandings and convey incorrect information, so openness can be considered a double-edged sword. I made several edits to the Wikipedia page for 'Daegu'.  Daegu, located in the southeastern part of South Korea, is the third-largest urban area in the country, following Seoul and Busan.
