The League of Legends EMEA Championship, abbreviated as LEC, is a professional League of Legends esports league operated by Riot Games in the Europe, Middle East, and Africa regions. The LEC represents the highest level of League of Legends competition in these areas. Established in 2013, the league’s success attracted significant media attention and played a major role in removing various barriers that had previously hindered the development of esports.
The documents I edited today are LCS (English) and Fanatic(Korean).

Any new, interesting, or unusual items learned
The League of Legends EMEA Championship was established in 2013. Interestingly, the league was launched in the third year of professional League of Legends play, meaning that professional players existed even before the league was formed. In 2016, just three years after its inception, France officially introduced various laws and regulations recognizing the LEC and the rights of esports players. Achieving such recognition in just three years reflects a level of interest and commitment that should not be taken lightly.
Identify at least one question, concern, or discussion
It is known that traditional sports athletes go through different procedures than ordinary travelers when traveling abroad for international competitions—for example, by obtaining special types of visas. Do esports players go through a similar process?
In addition, revised laws for esports players include improvements to visa procedures, guarantees for prize money payments, the establishment of a legal framework for esports contracts, and the protection of rights for underage players. Beyond these, are there any other legal measures that might be necessary?
Some esports players are eligible for special visa categories similar to those granted to traditional sports players. In the United States, for instance, the P-1A visa—typically reserved for internationally recognized athletes—has been extended to esports players since 2013. However, this privilege is generally limited to top-tier players such as Faker from T1.
ReplyDeleteWith regard to air travel, it is rare for esports players to be afforded chartered flights or dedicated transport arrangements akin to those provided to elite traditional sports teams. Nonetheless, organizations owned by large corporations may occasionally offer upgraded seating as part of their support for players.
In South Korea, a standardized labor contract for esports players has been introduced, marking a step toward formalizing employment practices in the industry. However, beyond contractual employment, welfare provisions remain inadequate. While some teams may offer periodic health check-ups, services such as pension schemes, insurance coverage, and post-retirement career transition programs are largely absent.
