New, interesting, or unusual items learned

SBS is the largest private broadcaster in South Korea, and is owned by the Taeyoung Construction. Unlike KBS and EBS, which are owned by the South Korea government, and MBC, which is owned by the Foundation for Broadcast Culture, SBS is not a public broadcaster. SBS was originally a regional broadcaster, with its signal limited to Seoul. However, following the immense popularity of the drama Sandglass(모래시계) in 1995, other regional broadcasters competed to acquire the rights to SBS programs. Consequently, SBS was eventually able to expand its broadcast coverage nationwide.

Question, concern, or discussion angle

SBS has served as the exclusive broadcaster of major international sporting events such as the Olympics, the Asian Games, and the FIFA World Cup. The broadcasting rights were purchased by SBS and then resold to KBS and MBC. However, the Olympic broadcasting rights are scheduled to be transferred to JTBC starting in 2026, while the rights to the Asian Games have been held by SPOTV since 2022.

Is it appropriate for privately-owned broadcasters such as SBS and JTBC to hold exclusive broadcasting rights to major international sports competitions? What about those who cannot afford to access pay television services? Should priority in the allocation of sports broadcasting rights be granted to public broadcasters such as KBS and MBC?

Comments

  1. Giving exclusive broadcasting rights to private networks like SBS and JTBC raises concerns about equal access. Major sporting events are of national interest and should be available to all citizens. Public broadcasters like KBS and MBC could ensure broader, free access to these events. Prioritizing them for such rights may better serve public interest. Still, fair competition and financial sustainability must also be considered.
