Intel Extreme Masters, commonly known as IEM, is an international esports tournament. Sponsored by Intel, this tournament was established in 2007 and has continued to be held to this day, making it one of the longest-running tournaments in the esports scene.

The tournament is operated by ESL, a subsidiary of the ESL FACEIT Group, which is owned by Savvy Games Group. Upon closer examination, Savvy Games Group is headquartered in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and is owned by the Public Investment Fund (PIF) of Saudi Arabia. It is quite intriguing that such a globally prestigious tournament is hosted by an organization based in Saudi Arabia. At the same time, it feels somewhat mismatched, and I couldn’t help but think that most gamers are likely unaware of this fact.

Identify at least one question, concern, or discussion

The Public Investment Fund (PIF) was established as a foundation for Saudi Arabia’s involvement in international sports. However, its activities have been accompanied by various religious and political controversies. There are ongoing concerns about human rights issues in Saudi Arabia, as well as suspicions that the country is using sports as a means to divert attention away from domestic issues. One of the most pressing concerns in the sports sector is “sportswashing.” Sportswashing refers to attempts to improve a country’s international reputation by hosting high-profile sporting events.

While redirecting public attention away from internal problems may not be the most appropriate approach, I believe it can nonetheless serve as a political tool. Traditionally, sportswashing has been limited to globally popular “traditional sports.” However, I anticipate that esports will be increasingly used for sportswashing purposes. The main reason is that, compared to sports like soccer or golf, esports requires significantly less preparation. There is no need for a soccer stadium or golf course—slight modifications to an existing performance venue are often sufficient. Due to these factors, I believe esports has great potential to be used in future sportswashing efforts.

What are your thoughts on sportswashing?

Comments

  1. Sportswashing is not a matter of debate; it is a present-day reality. The strategic use of sporting events to deflect attention from domestic and international issues is a practice employed not only by Saudi Arabia but by numerous other states. Such efforts are particularly prevalent among authoritarian regimes—though I will refrain from listing them explicitly.

However, there is growing skepticism regarding the actual effectiveness of sportswashing relative to its financial cost. A prominent example is the Olympic Games. While hosting the Olympics has long been perceived as a means of demonstrating national power, in practice, it has often resulted in significant economic losses. Consequently, an increasing number of countries are now reluctant to pursue Olympic bids. This may have made sense during the Cold War era, but today? Well, not sure.

If even mega-events like the Olympics and the FIFA World Cup fail to yield clear strategic or economic benefits, then the efficacy of esports as a soft power tool becomes even more questionable. This is not to diminish the potential of esports; rather, it is to maintain realistic expectations. I do not doubt the influence and global reach of competitive gaming, but it would be premature to suggest that the popularity of the League of Legends World Championship will surpass that of the World Cup.
