Challenges when writing a Wikipedia Article


Editing Wikipedia is already a challenge, finding reliable sources, staying neutral, following style guides, but when you’re doing it in a language that isn’t your first, it adds a whole new layer of difficulty.

One of the biggest struggles is confidence. Even if you understand the language well, it’s easy to second-guess your grammar, word choice, or tone. Wikipedia has high standards, and the fear of “not sounding native enough” can make you hesitate before clicking “publish.”

Then there’s vocabulary. In your native language, it’s easier to express complex ideas or choose the perfect word. But in a second language, sometimes you know what you want to say, but you can’t find the right way to say it clearly and correctly, especially when the topic is technical or academic.

You also have to be careful with words that look similar in both languages but mean different things. A small mistake can change the meaning of a sentence, or worse, make the article confusing or incorrect.

Then there is the community rules and disscutions. Participating in talk pages or edit disputes in another language can feel intimidating. It’s not always easy to explain your reasoning or understand others’ feedback when the conversation is fast-paced or uses slang or abbreviations.

Still, editing in a second language is incredibly rewarding. It helps you grow as both a writer and a learner.

 1. Summarize in my own words of materials. The book is primarily about the openness of Wikipedia. Openness means that anyone can participate in the creation and editing of articles without any qualifications. Openness can be a double-edged sword. While it means that you can edit without having expert knowledge of a topic, it also means that you can participate even if you have expert knowledge. For experts, articles written by non-experts can come across as inaccurate knowledge, which can anger experts. This anger can also be a catalyst for Wikipedia to continue to improve. However, articles edited only by non-experts can cause misunderstandings and convey incorrect information, so openness can be considered a double-edged sword. Week 1. My Recent Wikipedia Edits - Jeong seolah (정설아)

I made several edits to the Wikipedia page for 'Daegu'.  Daegu, located in the southeastern part of South Korea, is the third-largest urban area in the country, following Seoul and Busan. With a population exceeding 2.3 million, it is the fourth-largest metropolitan city in South Korea and the second-largest in the Yeongnam region after Busan. Often referred to together with the surrounding North Gyeongsang Province as Daegu-Gyeongbuk, this region is home to over 5 million residents.
