Week 9 Class Activities Natalie Tian (LookatmiWiki)
The Things I Learned
This week, I learned how to interact with other Wikipedia users through the Talk Page. I explored how to check for messages, reply to them respectfully, and continue a discussion in a constructive way. I also practiced writing my own message to a friend by sending a virtual “love pin” (like a brownie or a dessert) as a fun way to show appreciation and build community. These interactions made Wikipedia feel more like a social and collaborative space rather than just a site for reading and editing articles.
Interesting Point
I found it very interesting that even though Wikipedia is a global encyclopedia, the community aspect is just as important as the content itself. There’s a culture of kindness and etiquette, where people can send each other positive messages and continue improving articles together. It reminded me of other online communities, but this one is centered around learning and knowledge-sharing, which makes it feel very meaningful.
Question
How can we make sure our messages on Wikipedia stay polite and clear, especially when talking with strangers from different cultures and backgrounds?
I think we need to be especially careful when we talk to people from various cultures and backgrounds in Wikipedia. This is because there are many different people in Wikipedia and if we don't have a clear understanding of them, it can be rude to the other person. Therefore, I think it is necessary to try to understand their culture and to try to find them.
