Week 9 - Review about the article “List of hoaxes on Wikipedia” (Park Chaebin 박채빈)
1. Summarize in your own words the materials that you read
This article lists hoaxes created on English Wikipedia. A hoax is defined as a deliberate attempt to present false information as true. Hoaxes are included if they remained undetected for over a month or were covered by reliable media. The article also discusses how automated systems are more effective at detecting hoaxes than humans.
2. Mention any new, interesting, or unusual items that you learned through the lecture
The automated system for detecting hoaxes is more accurate than human detection. It analyzes article length, links, and the account that created the page. Hoaxes that last longer are more likely to have proper formatting and links to other articles. The fact that a hoax has an 18% chance of lasting for over a year if it survives the first day was surprising.
3. Identify at least one question, concern, or discussion angle that is either problematic in some respect or could have been elaborated more
Although automated systems are better at detecting hoaxes, they are not perfect. Human review is still important. It would be useful to examine why some hoaxes last longer. More case studies or data on how hoaxes spread would provide clearer insights. The effectiveness of automated detection versus human judgment could be discussed in more detail.
