Week 9 - Review about the article “Wikipedia in Culture”-CHEN SIWEN 진사문
1. Summarize in your own words the materials that you read
The article "Wikipedia in Culture" discusses how Wikipedia has moved far beyond its original role as an online encyclopedia and become a cultural symbol. It is referenced, parodied, and even physically honored across various forms of media—such as music videos, comedy shows, novels, statues, and memes. These references range from humorous vandalism to thoughtful artistic tributes, showing how Wikipedia both reflects and influences the digital culture of our time.
2. Mention any new, interesting, or unusual items that you learned through the lecture
One surprising thing I learned was that there is an actual statue called the Wikipedia Monument in Poland, dedicated to its contributors. That a website could inspire public art really shows its cultural importance. Another unexpected detail was that Wikipedia was used as a joke structure in a viral war meme, formatted like a serious historical article. These examples made me realize that Wikipedia isn’t just a source of facts, but also a source of creativity and humor.
3. Identify at least one question, concern, or discussion angle that is either problematic in some respect or could have been elaborated more
A concern that stood out to me is how Wikipedia’s open model might unintentionally favor certain demographics—especially English-speaking, internet-savvy users—which could lead to systemic bias in how knowledge is presented. The article touches on Wikipedia's cultural reach, but I think it could go deeper in questioning what values or worldviews are being spread through these cultural representations.
Questions:
1. How can Wikipedia communities work to make editing and content creation more accessible to underrepresented voices?
2. As Wikipedia continues to appear in popular culture, what does this say about our changing relationship with knowledge and authority?
