Over the past week, I focused on addressing the revision feedback provided by my instructor regarding the articles I had previously worked on, especially User:Wuwenhao19960507/sandbox_1 and User:Wuwenhao19960507/Real_estate_in_China. The goal of this editing session was not to add new content, but to improve the technical and formatting quality of the existing material in order to meet Wikipedia’s publication standards.

The main tasks I completed included identifying and fixing disambiguation links, properly formatting foreign-language references, and updating the metadata in my citations. To begin, I enabled the “Display links to disambiguation pages in orange” gadget in my Wikipedia preferences. This feature immediately revealed several problematic links throughout the article, which I then replaced with the correct target articles to ensure better navigability and accuracy.

Another major part of my work involved refining citations, especially those referencing Chinese and Korean sources. Following the feedback, I added the original titles using the title= parameter and provided accurate English translations using the trans-title= parameter. Additionally, I reviewed each citation to ensure the metadata was complete, adding missing author names, publication dates, and correcting wrongly assigned publishers such as “web.archive.org,” which is only an archival tool, not a content source. These adjustments greatly improved the clarity and credibility of my references.

One specific challenge I faced was determining the correct way to translate certain titles while maintaining their academic tone. In some cases, the literal translation did not adequately capture the context of the original publication, so I had to strike a balance between fidelity to the source and clarity for international readers. To resolve this, I referred to similar examples from featured Wikipedia articles and consulted translation tools and academic glossaries to ensure consistency.

Through this editing session, I gained a deeper understanding of Wikipedia’s technical standards for citations, particularly for multilingual references. It also reminded me that high-quality content is not just about informative writing, but also about accessibility, structure, and verification.

One question that came up during this process was how to best cite sources that exist only as scanned documents or in non-HTML formats. While I know that Wikimedia Commons can be used for uploading such files, I’m still exploring how to ensure copyright compliance and proper formatting when archiving PDF-based sources.

Overall, this week’s experience highlighted the importance of precision and consistency in academic-style writing for Wikipedia. Even seemingly minor issues like disambiguation links or missing metadata can affect an article’s overall quality and acceptance into the public space. I look forward to continuing to refine my work and applying these insights to future Wikipedia contributions.

 1. Summarize in my own words of materials. The book is primarily about the openness of Wikipedia. Openness means that anyone can participate in the creation and editing of articles without any qualifications. Openness can be a double-edged sword. While it means that you can edit without having expert knowledge of a topic, it also means that you can participate even if you have expert knowledge. For experts, articles written by non-experts can come across as inaccurate knowledge, which can anger experts. This anger can also be a catalyst for Wikipedia to continue to improve.
