Week10----Wikipedia Editors of the Week-HE ZIXUAN
1. Summary
A small revision is also part of knowledge. This week, I participated in the editing of the Wikipedia entry "Harbin". My revisions mainly focused on the city's history and culture, supplementing Harbin's history and updating the city's rapid development in ice and snow tourism in recent years. This edit not only improved the timeliness of the entry, but also made me better understand how the city of Harbin has evolved into what it is today under the influence of multiple cultures and geography.
2. Interesting points
During the editing process, I accidentally discovered several interesting details:Harbin was once one of the Far Eastern cities with the highest concentration of Jews: in the early 20th century, Harbin had more than 20,000 Jewish residents, as well as a complete synagogue and community system. Today, the Harbin Jewish Cemetery has been completely preserved and is one of the most important Jewish relics in East Asia.
The architectural diversity behind the "Little Paris of the East": Harbin's Central Street is not just a background for tourists to take pictures. It brings together a variety of architectural styles such as Russian, French, Byzantine, and Jewish, forming a "living fossil" of urban memory.
The internationalization of Harbin Beer: From its founding in 1900 to becoming a brand under Budweiser, Harbin Beer's "foreign" style is not a modern phenomenon. It is itself a product of the economic and cultural integration of China and Russia.
3. Discussion
Can the power of open editing really represent the truth? For example, in the Harbin entry, the content about modern youth culture, underground music scenes, and ethnic minority communities is still relatively scarce. Is it because the information is difficult to obtain? Or is it because the people involved in the editing focus on a certain perspective?
It often helps the quality of information by supplementing the content through public editing, but I agree that there is a lack of content. I think it is both true that the reason is that it is difficult to obtain information and that it focuses on the characteristics of the people who participate in editing. In the process of searching for information, individuals tend to focus more on areas related to their interests, etc.
ReplyDeleteThis blog is a good summary of your findings from editing Wikipedia, especially the details of Harbin's unique history and culture. However, the lack of modern youth culture and ethnic minority communities is indeed worth further discussion. You can try to explore the contemporary face of Harbin from more diverse perspectives, which may bring a more comprehensive perspective to readers.
