Week11 -- My Wikipedia Edits -- LIU ZIYE

 1) Summary of Content

This week, I contributed to the English Wikipedia article Anti-Korean sentiment in China. While reading and editing the page, I noticed that it contains many references to historical conflicts, internet incidents, and nationalist sentiments. Some of the descriptions appear quite negative from a Chinese perspective, which made me feel emotionally conflicted as a Chinese reader. However, I also realized that most of the content was backed by factual evidence and reliable sources. Therefore, I tried to take an objective and fact-based approach during editing. I made minor adjustments to tone and wording to improve neutrality and added some new citations to enhance the article’s accuracy and credibility.

2) Interesting Discoveries
What I found particularly interesting was how detailed Wikipedia is when it comes to cross-national public opinion controversies. Contributors from different countries often add or revise content from their own perspectives. Although disagreements may arise, this global collaboration has taught me how to “de-emotionalize” sensitive topics and focus on verifiable facts. It also helped me improve my accuracy in using English, especially when dealing with nuanced or politically sensitive expressions.

3) Questions and Discussion Points
During this editing experience, I began to wonder: can Wikipedia truly remain neutral when it comes to politically or nationally sensitive topics? Especially when contributors from different countries interpret “facts” differently, how can we achieve a balanced narrative?

Week 1. My Recent Wikipedia Edits - Jeong seolah (정설아)

I made several edits to the Wikipedia page for 'Daegu'.  Daegu, located in the southeastern part of South Korea, is the third-largest urban area in the country, following Seoul and Busan. With a population exceeding 2.3 million, it is the fourth-largest metropolitan city in South Korea and the second-largest in the Yeongnam region after Busan.  1. Summarize in my own words of materials. The book is primarily about the openness of Wikipedia. Openness means that anyone can participate in the creation and editing of articles without any qualifications. Openness can be a double-edged sword. While it means that you can edit without having expert knowledge of a topic, it also means that you can participate even if you have expert knowledge. For experts, articles written by non-experts can come across as inaccurate knowledge, which can anger experts. This anger can also be a catalyst for Wikipedia to continue to improve. However, articles edited only by non-experts can cause misunderstandings and convey incorrect information, so openness can be considered a double-edged sword.
