Week11-ZHONG QI-The Intersection of Participatory Culture and Wiki Collaboration

1) Summary of Materials

This week’s learning focused on two parts. First, chapters 3-5 of Henry Jenkins’ *Convergence Culture: Where Old and New Media Collide* explain how "participatory culture" turns fans from passive audiences into active creators. Jenkins uses examples to show how fans work together, discuss ideas, and change mainstream stories. He emphasizes community, group knowledge, and easy ways to create content. Second, two LMS videos taught us how to submit articles to Wikipedia’s "Did You Know" section following format rules, and explained technical assignment requirements, including accessibility design guidelines.

2) Interesting Learning Points

Jenkins’ idea of "weak-tie networks" stood out to me: even with loose connections, fan groups share information very efficiently, much like Wikipedia’s editing system. The "Did You Know" video taught me that a good summary needs both accuracy and a "hook" to grab attention in one sentence – showing the art of information design. I was surprised by the strict accessibility rules in the technical assignment, like image alt-text and page readability, reminding creators to consider all users’ needs.

3) Questions and Discussion Topics

Jenkins praises participatory culture but doesn’t fully discuss how companies control creative spaces. When platforms delete fan content, is participation still truly free? Also, does Wikipedia’s "Did You Know" voting system favor popular topics over niche ones? Should high-quality articles about less-known subjects still get recognition? From participatory culture to wiki editing, we need to discuss: How do we balance creative freedom with platform rules? How do we respect both user experience and editor independence? These questions deserve deeper classroom discussion.
