 Summary:

We all know that Wikipedia's discussion pages are the "behind-the-scenes" of each entry. They are not for ordinary readers, but rather spaces for editors to coordinate their work. Here, editors will explore issues such as the structure, wording, neutrality, and reliability of citation sources. For example, if a user wants to add negative news about a public figure to an entry, they must first present reasons on the discussion page, provide reliable sources, and negotiate consensus with other editors. The discussion page records the reasons for version changes, reflecting the entire process of knowledge collaboration.

Interesting points:

Although it sounds serious, there are also interesting phenomena on the discussion page. Firstly, there is the "editing war," where two factions of users have long been uncompromising in their narratives about topics such as political figures, historical events, religious beliefs, and more, often engaging in battles and verbal sparring.


Another interesting point is that discussion pages often feature a "conflict" in writing style: some emphasize simplicity and clarity, while others adhere to academic rigor, and both sides can struggle with verbs in a single sentence for hundreds of words. Some discussion pages unexpectedly veer off topic and become deep debates in philosophy, language, or culture. Even some users have written poems on discussion pages to satirize their opponents, showcasing the creativity and sense of humor of the Wikipedia community.

Discussion:

The Wikipedia discussion page embodies the ideal of collaboration but also highlights its limitations. Despite Wikipedia's emphasis on consensus mechanisms, many editors in reality find themselves embroiled in endless debates or exit due to "editing fatigue." This also makes us wonder: is all knowledge suitable for organizing through open collaboration? Is the discussion page sufficient to handle all conflicts and achieve balance when dealing with sensitive or complex issues?

    The Wikipedia discussion page embodies a spirit of cooperation, but it also faces practical challenges. Although many editors advocate resolving differences through consensus, they often get stuck in prolonged debates or exit due to fatigue. This indicates that open collaboration is not applicable to all knowledge, especially sensitive or complex issues, making it difficult for discussion pages to effectively resolve conflicts. For this, more professional review mechanisms and expert involvement may be necessary to ensure that the content is both open and authoritative.

 1. Summarize in my own words of materials. The book is primarily about the openness of Wikipedia. Openness means that anyone can participate in the creation and editing of articles without any qualifications. Openness can be a double-edged sword. While it means that you can edit without having expert knowledge of a topic, it also means that you can participate even if you have expert knowledge. For experts, articles written by non-experts can come across as inaccurate knowledge, which can anger experts. This anger can also be a catalyst for Wikipedia to continue to improve.
