Week9 Class Discussion- Kwon Hyunji(권현지)
1. Summary
In this session, we directly answered
questions on Wikipedia's help desk and exchanged help with each other. Through
this activity, we were able to see once again that Wikipedia is conducted with
the help of various people. In addition, we took time to participate in
Wikipedia and Discord, which are categorized in each country's language, and
introduce ourselves as new editors learning about Wikipedia. We also learned
about Wikilove, a function that allows people to click on the heart icon on the
user page to send positive messages and thanks to those who contributed to good
editing. Through Wikilove, people get a positive response to an editing they
did and are influenced by it, so they become more engaged in it. In fact,
Wikipedia editors say that if their edits are ignored by other editors, they
will not edit it.
It was interesting to see that people who got Wikilevel turned positive. As I mentioned earlier, clicking on the heart icon in Wikipedia can get a positive response from our editors. I think those who received it can feel firsthand and feel proud that people responded positively to their editing. And I felt once again that just as positive feedback from each other is important in face-to-face activities, it is also the same in the process of creating an online encyclopedia. I also felt that I should actively utilize this function. Respect and consideration for each other can further expand our knowledge.
3. Discussion
What are some good ways to encourage
Wikipedia users to participate besides Wikilove?
What should Wikipedia users do to be more
interactive?
