Week9 - KIM JUHEE (김주희) : Reading

  1. Summary
This article is about the Free Culture Movement from Wikipedia. It explains what the Free Culture Movement is and provides a basic understanding. The article supports the idea of loosening restrictions on copyright, and you can see a rather generous attitude toward it. The article also mentions other related concepts like Open Access (OA), Remix Culture, Hacker Culture, Knowledge Access Movement, Copyleft Movement, and Public Domain Movement. It made me think it would be good to look up these terms separately to learn more about them. The article even links to these terms. Additionally, the article talks about the background and history of how the Free Culture Movement came to be.

  2. Interesting Points
Personally, I think copyright should be strictly enforced, so it was interesting to read this article because it presents the opposite view. Hearing a different opinion is similar to learning new facts, and I found it fascinating. It was also surprising to learn that there are sub-concepts like the Free Music Movement that stemmed from this idea. Another interesting point is that the Free Art Movement, despite having a similar name, actually supports strict copyright protection, which makes it completely different from the Free Culture Movement. The similarity in names could easily lead to confusion, so it was good to see this distinction.

  3. Questions and Discussion
Which do you think is better for society and morality: loosening copyright laws like in the Free Culture Movement or strictly enforcing copyright? If the Free Culture Movement is actively implemented, do you think it would cause many problems related to copyright? What are the advantages and disadvantages if the Free Culture Movement becomes widespread?
