Week9--Recent Wikipedia edits--ZHANG XIAOTONG(장효동)
Summary
In the past week, I continued to concentrate on the sandbox translation task of the Chinese Wikipedia article "Yangguan Forest Farm Storm". According to the professor's suggestion, I focused on two technical details: cross-language links and English translation of reference notes. These two parts may seem like auxiliary information, but they directly affect the readability, credibility and user experience of the article.
Interesting Points
1. Use of interlanguage links
During the translation process, I originally thought that I only needed to simply replace the Chinese internal links in the entries with English entry links. However, in practice, I found that many institutions, such as "Gansu Provincial Government" and "Ministry of Ecology and Environment"), had no corresponding entries on the English Wikipedia, or their English names were not intuitive. Therefore, under the guidance of the professor, I used cross-language links to transfer the links on the Chinese Wikipedia to the English Wikipedia, avoiding the creation of "red links" to ensure the professionalism and integrity of the entries.
2. Translation of reference notes
When I first started the translation editing, I mistakenly changed the original Chinese reference material and translated it into English, but this would result in the loss of the original material during translation, so I restored the original Chinese title and reference link and added the English translation to the template.
Related reflections:
The process of dealing with cross-language links made me realize that Wikipedia is not just a collection of language knowledge, but also a convergence of global semantic systems. The citations in the reference notes make the translator bear the responsibility of "interpreting the cultural context" and need to be treated with more caution.
