Week 14 - Wikipedia edits (Chaebin Park 박채빈)
1. Summary
For this week’s Wikipedia editing, I worked on the article about Nodeulseom, a cultural complex located in the heart of Seoul. The reason I chose this topic was that I recently visited Nodeulseom with a friend for the first time. It was a perfect day for a picnic—great weather, beautiful landscaping, and a scenic view of the Han River. The experience left such a strong impression that I wanted to improve the information available about the place.
The original article was very minimal and lacked key details, especially about the island's background and features. So, I added two new sections: 'History of Nodeulseom' and 'Facility', aiming to highlight its transformation and the wide range of spaces it offers. As Nodeulseom is a popular spot for both locals and international tourists, I made sure to provide accurate and informative content for a global audience.
2. Interesting Points
While researching Nodeulseom, I found it particularly interesting that the island had once been a neglected and underutilized area. Through citizen participation and urban regeneration projects, it has been successfully redeveloped into a vibrant cultural space.
I was surprised to learn about the variety of facilities it now offers, such as a music library, a greenhouse, an outdoor stage, and restaurants, all integrated beautifully with the island’s natural environment. The slogan “Global art island” feels very fitting, as Nodeulseom has grown into a space where art and culture coexist with leisure and nature. It’s not just a place to relax; it’s a meaningful destination for cultural experiences.
3. Discussion
This editing experience made me realize that even ordinary spaces can become meaningful places when we understand their history and transformation. Since I visited the site myself before editing, the process felt more personal and engaging—it wasn’t just about adding facts, but about conveying the value of a space I had truly experienced.
Nodeulseom is a great example of how previously unused spaces can be revitalized into cultural landmarks through thoughtful urban planning.
Question:
Do you know of any other spaces that were once underused but have been transformed into major cultural or tourist attractions through urban regeneration?
What kind of role do these spaces play in a city today?
