week 15 What I learned from editing Wikipedia - Kwon Hyunji(권현지)
Until I took this class, I had never participated in Wikipedia editing. So, for the first time, learning about the principles of Wikipedia and participating in them in person felt new and unfamiliar. Since it was my first activity, there were difficult parts when learning how to edit. I learned editing skills such as document format, link, and source notation, but I remember that you have to fill it out according to a specific format, especially when marking sources. This is because Wikipedia is a way for everyone to participate together, so it is easier to find and use information by following the editing form well.
As I carried out the task of editing
Wikipedia, I realized the importance of cooperation. I learned that if there is
a part of my activity that I lacked, someone can make up for it, and I can also
help others with their activities and deliver useful information to many people
around the world. While editing Wikipedia in this way, I learned that a real
'encyclopedia' can be made when a large number of people's knowledge is
gathered. And since it is a space where various people create together, I tried
to convey information from a as objective and unbiased perspective as possible
rather than individual opinions. People I don't know can also see the
information I wrote, so I have a responsible attitude to select and deliver the
information more carefully considering various people. I also thought about
Wikipedia's global influence in that it delivers new information in each
country's language and delivers the information I know to each other regardless
of nationality.
Due to the nature of Wikipedia, it is
released online and can be viewed by anyone, showing different characteristics
from previous tasks. As a result, I was able to further develop the quality of
the article by being able to edit or supplement the feedback of those who are
taking classes together, as well as others around the world. In this way, it
was interesting in that anyone could give feedback on my assignment and I could
also give feedback on documents written by others. The biggest difference from
existing assignments was that I could pass on the knowledge I knew to others
and that my assignments were more diverse and useful knowledge increased by
others.
The
ability to generate knowledge has improved through the task of editing
Wikipedia, which was performed during the semester. I felt that knowledge was
greater by sharing it with others than when I had it alone, and I thought about
how to convey useful information.
