Week13(extra credit):Technology Assignment--ZHANG XIAOTONG(장효동)

 Summary:

The theme of this experiment was "Observing the Impact of Technology on Daily Life." My partner and I tried to go an entire day without using modern technological products such as smartphones, computers, televisions, and the internet. This was not only an observational task but also a hands-on social experiment to experience the effects of living without technology. Through this experiment, I gained a more intuitive understanding that “technology is not just a tool but a structural part of our lives.”

Interesting Points:

On the day of the experiment, I avoided using smartphones, computers, and the internet from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. To ensure I didn’t cheat, I placed my phone somewhere out of sight and recorded my feelings and behavioral changes by hand.

In the morning, I used a mechanical alarm clock to wake up. I instinctively wanted to check the time on my phone but remembered I wasn’t allowed to use it. While catching the bus, I missed it because I couldn’t use a real-time transit app. In the afternoon, I tried to meet up with a friend, but since I couldn’t contact them, I had to wait at the prearranged location, feeling a bit uneasy and helpless. In the evening, I couldn’t watch videos or use social media to relax, so I felt bored and went to bed earlier than usual.

Through this experiment, I found that many actions I usually do without thinking suddenly became complicated. I truly experienced how deeply modern people rely on technology.

Reflection:

This experiment made me realize that while some technologies like digital clocks and TVs can be replaced, others—like smartphones and navigation apps—have become deeply embedded in our daily lives and are almost indispensable. Technology is no longer just a tool, but a necessary part of our existence. It subtly reshapes our life rhythms and the way we socialize.

Although the day was challenging, it was also highly meaningful. It made me reflect on which technologies are truly essential and which ones are just habits. More importantly, the experience helped me recognize that the ability to reflect on and balance our use of technology is an essential skill for modern living.
