Week14---Class Discussion -Do you think Wikipedia is a good news site?--HE ZIXUAN

 I. Abstract:

Wikipedia is not a typical news website. It is an encyclopedic collaborative platform designed to record knowledge, events, and concepts rather than publish news in real time. Although it contains many entries about major news events and updates very quickly, it lacks the real-time nature, news editing process, and journalist interview mechanism of traditional news media.

2. Interesting points:

The speed of crowd wisdom is amazing: Wikipedia usually updates relevant entries within minutes after some major events (such as the death of a celebrity, natural disasters, political crises), which is faster than some news websites.

Neutral mechanism vs. subjective reporting: Wikipedia adheres to the "neutral point of view", which is different from the reporting style of many news websites with a stance. It strives to present multiple perspectives rather than one voice.

3. Discussion

Is it possible for a knowledge platform based on collective collaboration like Wikipedia to become a more trusted source of information than traditional news media?

Comments

  1. I believe a knowledge platform like Wikipedia can become a more trusted source than traditional news media. While traditional media often reflects editorial bias, corporate interests, or political agendas, Wikipedia relies on transparent, collaborative editing and verifiability through cited sources. Its content is constantly reviewed and updated by a global community, which can lead to more balanced and comprehensive coverage. Although Wikipedia is not free from flaws or misinformation, its open model allows for quicker corrections and wider participation. As digital literacy grows, people may increasingly value transparency and community-driven knowledge over institutional authority.

  2. Hi,HE ZIXUAN
I really enjoyed reading your post—your point about how fast Wikipedia updates after major events was especially striking. It’s fascinating to think that a crowdsourced platform can sometimes outpace professional newsrooms. One small thought: maybe you could also touch on the challenges that come with that speed, like the risk of misinformation or lack of expert oversight. I think adding that would give readers a fuller picture of why trust in Wikipedia is both impressive and complicated. Great job overall!
