Week14 -- the edits I have made -- GUAN YUE
1. Summary
This week, I made a small edit to the Chinese Wikipedia article on Matteo Ricci. I added two references to the “Personal Background” section—one from an official biography and another about his activities in Nanchang, China. I noticed that this part had detailed information but no sources, which might affect the article’s credibility. Since Ricci is such a significant figure in Chinese history and culture, I thought it was necessary to improve the accuracy of this section.
2. New Things I Learned
Although Matteo Ricci is a well-known historical figure, I found that his Wikipedia page still had some unsourced parts. This helped me realize that editing Wikipedia isn’t always about making major changes—sometimes even a small fix, like adding reliable references, can make a big difference. I also became more familiar with how Chinese Wikipedia formats citations and what kind of sources are considered reliable.
Another thing I learned is that famous articles are not always “complete.” Even well-known entries can have gaps or outdated content. Instead of always focusing on new article creation, checking and improving existing popular entries is also a meaningful contribution.
3. Question for Discussion
This experience made me wonder: do we sometimes overlook missing references in well-known articles simply because we assume they must be complete? Should we pay more attention to the quality of references even in popular topics?
